Part A helps cover your inpatient care in hospitals. For many, Part A is included without having to pay a monthly premium.
Part B helps cover the cost medical services like doctor's services, outpatient care and other medical services (medically necessary) that Part A doesn't cover. Part B is optional and you may pay a premium for Part B coverage every month.
Part C includes all the coverage of Original Medicare (Part A hospital and Part B medical ) plus added benefits all in one plan. Depending on your plan, you may pay a premium for Part C coverage every month.
Part D helps lower your prescription drug costs. Part D coverage may be included with a Medicare Advantage plan or may be purchased separately.
Original Medicare can provide you basic coverage. In fact, Original Medicare alone covers 80% of most medical expenses but does NOT provide prescription drug coverage (Part D).
In addition to Original Medicare, you can also add a Medicare Supplement plan to fill gaps not covered by Medicare alone. Similar to Original Medicare, you will need to purchase a separate plan for prescription drug coverage (Part D).
Medicare Advantage plans can provide all the benefits under Original Medicare and more, including Part D prescription drug coverage.
Three months before and three months after you turn 65
For a few, the initial enrollment period could also be when Part A or Part B become effective.
Year Round
Perhaps you are retiring or moving? The enrollment period is open year round due to special circumstances.
October 15 - December 7
Each year, you can join, switch, or drop a plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7).
January 1 - March 31
If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to Original Medicare during this time. You can also switch to another Medicare Advantage plan as well.
